Posting rules poll for our team

It has come to our attention that some of our members aren't following the team's weekly posting rules, thus making it unfair to dedicated posting members. Therefore, our team's VP, Mary of StarryHomeCrafts and Edna/QuiltSALAD, Team founder and leader have decided to give all members a say on the posting rules via a poll.

Please be sure to exercise your patriotic duty, and cast your vote in our team's poll.

In addition, here are other suggestions for fairness:

A. Posting rules will be determined according to the poll results; but, ALL members please be sure to post at least in the FIRST WEEK of each MONTH in order to remain on the team as an active member. Members not posting at least once during the first week of each month will be removed from the team WITHOUT NOTICE. We value all of our members; and we look forward to everyone posting according to the poll results, and in the first week for "rollcall". Thus, keeping things fair for everyone.

B. Only regular WEEKLY posters get listed on the blog. (As it stands now the rule is once per week, so this could change according to the poll results).

If members have questions or concerns about these posting suggestions, please convo VP, Mary or Leader, Edna/Quiltsalad. We want to make it fair for everyone.

Made from an assortment of 1930s feedsack reproduction fabrics in pinks, greens, yellows and blues, this quilt measures approximately 36 inches x 36 inches. All fabrics are 100% cotton and the Warm and Natural batting is also 100% cotton.

So soft and squishy, this little puppy is made from 100% cotton red, white and blue stripe fabric and is backed with super soft red fleece. Stuffing is poly fiber fill. It measures approximately 14 inches long by 11 inches tall.

This cute little hands free purse attaches to your belt loops also known as a hip bag. Its made with layers of ribbons and pink rose fabric on a white background and measures 10 1/2 inches wide at the base and 7 inches deep. This was handmade by me in my sewing studio.

This little girl initial quilt turned out so cute!! These are my popular initial quilts. This beautiful quilt is made from Lovely by Sandy Gervais of Moda. The colors are done in a dark coral, green, and yellow, aqua and white. The background is done in the white with multi colored polka dots The colors go beautifully together. The prints are Polka dots, and florals. The backing will be done in the white with the coral little flowers.

Chickie is done in a gold color, with embroidered black eyes, and a sweet little hat with purple and blue posey's on it . Her hat is designed especially for her in a buff color. She has two legs with 3 toes. She is approx. 10" tall.

Spring Wall Hanging by JaciStuff
This bright and cheerful wall hanging is perfect to welcome in Spring and your guests. It is made of Wool and wool blend felt. This measures 21" accross and 19" high. It is oval shaped.
It has double and triple layered felt pennies and flowers which are further embellished with flower shaped buttons. The buttons are hand embroidered blanket stitched. The leaves have hand embroidered details. Along the top is lettered "welcome". They are all growing out of a very realistic flower pot.

"BLUE HOUSE, BLUE GARDEN"

This lovely work reminds me of a beautiful house out in the country, admist the fresh air and fields of plenty. The Artist, Emmaklee, says: "I got the idea for this picture from a description I read in a book of a “little blue house.” Ages ago, I bought a remnant of blue ultrasuede I’d never used; I started my palette selection with that fabric. I buy a lot of my materials secondhand – the green satin in this picture was from a Habitat For Humanity store, & the doorknob was part of a necklace a found at Goodwill & took apart".

"Prickly Pool"

Such a beautiful cactus scene. I love how the bird bath sits admist this lovely bird inviting scene. The Artist,SticksAndBroomstraws, says: "I was visiting the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix one hot morning when I happened upon a shady spot with a welcoming bench and small fountain for the birds. I photographed the scene and later gathered the supplies to create a quilt to capture the scene. Luckily I had some fabric printed with prickly pear cactus! The rest was easy. I created fusible applique pieces for the fountain, stony ground, and cactus. For embellishment I used sparkly thread to emphasize the cactus thorns and glittering water. For extra bling I added crystal beads as well. Quilting made the picture complete and captured that shady spot in the garden".

"Horus Egyptian"

The mysteries of ancient Egypt still mystifies many of us today. Gotta love this piece of old world artwork. The Artist, Threadsofmagique, says: "Horus Spreads His Wings: standing on a dock, his wings spread to catch the rays of the morning sun, the god Horus embodies the timeless spirit of the Nile. The son of Isis and Osiris, Horus was well known in the myths of Ancient Egypt. He was a god of the sky whose eyes were the sun and the moon, and also a god of victory. The pharaoh was said to be the Living Horus, the god come to earth. Horus was associated with the falcon or hawk, and was most often shown as either a falcon or a man with the head of a falcon."
"Island Cliffs"

You've gotta love how the waves bash the huge rocks on this one. So much talent. The Artist, ZoeDockery, says: "Some people tell me that "Island Cliffs" looks like the virgin islands. To me it looks like imagination. As a child when I made art I would make up the landscape according to how I perceived it. As I grew into an adult I learned to take references from pictures or plein air so that my artwork would look more realistic. When I made "Island cliffs" I decided to be brave and find my inner child again. I let my memories tell me what the landscape should look like. Most importantly, making the piece was fun and invigorating in a way that I had forgotten that making art could be."
"Older than Stonehenge"

I think that we've all wondered about Stonehenge and its' ancient mysteries. This artist, ArtemisiaStudio, says: "My art is informed by my travels and my love of art history. This small wall-hanging (25"x15") is just such a piece. It represents the Castlerigg Stone Circle in Cumbria England. The art quilt is executed in cotton fabrics of gold, green, blue and purple. Some of the fabrics are imprinted with gold. The machine quilting was done by me at my home studio. The quilt represents an ancient stone circle that is nearly complete and is older than Stonehenge. It sits in farmer's field surrounded by rolling hills which are mimiced in the varying sizes of stones around the circle. The natural setting of the stone circle is magical and I have tried to capture that feeling in this lovely little quilt."
"STORM RISING ON THE MANITOWISH"

So much went into this lush forest/water/fish scene, and it paid off. Just look at the beautiful and colorful outcome. The artist, QuiltingCafe, says: "Just before the rain, the thunder, the winds, and the lightning, a strange hue comes over the sky and the forest. Raw edged appliqued and quilted landscape. Each piece of fabric was meticulous placed on the background. Free form quilting with metallic and varigated threads hold it all down. To give added dimension,clear rock beads simulate water and chiffon was added for the movement. Ceramic stones and yarn represent the forest floor. " "Serendipity"

Don't cha just love the colors in this giraffe. I think that any child would, also, love to have this cute quilt. The artist, Joystrings, says: "The making of Serendipity was one happy accident after another. Nothing on this quilt was planned. It started with applique on black and white which evolved into a giraffe. The giraffe then needed a place to live and her home on the savanna was born. The making of this quilt was one of the few times where my head let my imagination rule and it was pure joy to create."

"Great Sand Dunes"

Great work. I love the snow capped mountains and all of the applique work here. The artist, Jenshipthreads, says: " I started making landscape quilts a few years ago when I decided to make a wall hanging that paid tribute to the tallest mountain in Colorado that my father and I had hiked together. I gave this gift to my parents for Christmas and it was a big hit with them and the rest of the family as well. Since I enjoyed making the wall hanging so much, I continued to take photographs on nature hikes and pick the best to be appliqued and turned into a landscape quilt. This particular quilt is in honor of the Great Sand Dunes National Park, which is one of the most unique landscapes that I have ever been to! The tall sand dunes, and even taller Sangre De Cristo mountains behind them is an amazing site; standing on the top of the dunes is even better".

"Life on the Farm"

As I grew up on a farm, this field scene is so familiar. The artist, DD Boutique, says, "The title of this quilt is "Life on the Farm." It was inspired by the Ohio Amish country. It feels so peaceful and calm in the farm land. I couldn't resist combining my new love for landscape quilting with the peaceful and serine feel on the farm land. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it."

"Manistique Lighthouse"

I could sit out by the lighthouse and fish all day. The artist, Northernskyquilts says " This quilt features the wonderful lighthouse in Manistique, Michigan. The lighthouse was constructed using a couple of different red fabrics, subtle but you can see the lighthouse is not just one red. I think that gives the lighthouse more dimension. The lighthouse beacon has a large Swarovski crystal placed on hand painted fabric. The rocks for the breakwater were free-form cut using several fabrics. The large seagull has wings that are three dimensional.

"Lonely Road"

I love the highway scene in this work of art, and see it as the road to nowhere. To me, it has a membrance of walking off life's troubles. Walk to the end of this road, and all of your troubles are gone. LOL. The artist, Clothscapes says, "This is an area near where I grew up, I would walk here when I wanted time to be alone. When I look at this I still get that sense of peacful solitude. Wallhanging quilt made with raw edged applique".

"Midsummer Moon quilt! "

This cutie was made my SylvanQuilts. This reminds me of a nice summer night. She says, "This stunning one-of-a-kind quilted wall-hanging depicts a glowing full moon over a quiet mountain lake. It contains 25 different fabrics and is machine quilted using a raw edge applique technique. A sprinkle of beads on the flowers has been added for sparkle. The butterfly and some of the flowers and leaves are three-dimensional and lift off the surface of the quilt slightly to add depth and interest. This piece is from my own original pattern".

Don't cha just love the look of this old barn, and the country look? This magnificient piece was made by LauraGlassArtQuilts. She says, "This piece is based on an old barn near our house. The weather-beaten paint, the dappled light of the trees in early summer and the cheery flower box all caught my eye. I used raw edge applique of commercial cotton fabrics and hand-dyed batiks to re-create this simple, homey scene".

This is an original design by Nmac52. I love the mountain/pyramid look on this little gem. She says, "a landscape which includes mountains, a lake, hills and pine trees. Red bunches of flowers are in the foreground. This piece of art is machine stitched; it has a black border and a batik green fabric frame which is quilted with a free-motion design."

This is a special "tree" quilt that was made by HummingbirdTreasures. Notice the lovely coordinated colors of the earthtone fields with the tree sitting amidst. She did a wonderful job creating the black and white patchwork background; and then adding the beautiful pink tonal appliqued flowers. Don't cha just love the little ladybugs !! This cutie has three coordinating borders. A real gem for your wall.

Youl'll notice some completed crazy blocks amongst the stash. Somehow a few balls of yarn found their way into the photo below. My name is Edna. I'm President of the wonderful Quilts and Heirlooms team. Thought I'd just show some of the wonderful fabrics that I've been accused of hoarding. Now who really hoardes fabric! We quilters, sewers, know that these wonderful assortments of florals, prints, plaids, retros, cottons, blends, etc. will go into some gorgeous project at some point in this lifetime or in the next. But you just can't accuse us of hoarding. We are fabric genuises. Just wait until you see the next quilt, purse, bag, tote, coat of many colors, diaper that we come up with.

The photo shows just one of the giveaways.

I was blogging today and clicked on a blog mainly because of the name, Canton. There is a Canton, Georgia, north of Atlanta, therefore out of curiousity, I clicked to learn whether the blogger was from Canton, Georgia (she's actually from Canton, Connecticut).

But what really dropped my jaws was that when I looked at her comment section, I noticed that she had 1, 561 comments on ONE post. Of course, I double checked to make sure that I was seeing what I was seeing. (I had only looked at the photos in that post). I then scrolled to the page top to read and find out why so many people were commenting.

That's when I realized that the author was having a giveaway. Though the deadline is upon us/has passed, I felt that others would like to know about this story.

Black Bag Terrorizes Beautiful Black Giant Chicken Chaka

Well, you might say that I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, in the southeast U.S.A., along with my trusted camera. It happened on a nice cool day in late August 2009. As I was photoing my new line of lunch bags in the FRONT yard, all hell broke loose in the BACK yard.

My six teenagers (chickens) emitted the familar loud warning sound that I hear when a suspect (dog, cat or whatever they feel unsafe around) enters their territory. Upon hearing the panicky distressed sounds, I immediately picked up a stick (I keep several in strategic places for times like this so to always be prepared to fight off the enemy, a dog or cat) and ran to the back yelling, without seeing a single thing, "get away, get away". -For I just knew that the biggest dog in town had encringed upon the territory of my precious little angels . (They do have a secure area, but when they come out to graze, I constantly monitor them.)

Well, when I finally reached the back yard (it seemed to have taken half an eternity) all that I could make of the scene was that my lovely Black Giant teenager, Chaka, as in Chaka Khan, had somehow gotten one of her legs caught in a black plastic bag, and was fluttering about, and running in every direction, with the entire team of six squaking to the top of their gizzards, and more frightened than a chicken should ever have to experience. How the bag got into the yard, I will leave for Kojak to figure out.

Now, of course, she would not stand still and allow me to remove the bag; but I did manage to capture several photos of the event. Any attempts to approach her, and she would take off again with "her" bag trailing. Upon realizing that I would not be able to rescue her, I returned to my photo session. About 5 minutes later, I returned to the back to attempt another rescue of her from the bag, and was pleased to find her just fine and grazing with her flock again. I will never know for sure exactly how she managed to remove the bag. A day or two later, I did find the bag in the lower yard, mostly shredded and caught on a small stump. My guess is that the bag somehow, during her running session, became caught on the stump and WALA, Chaka became free.

Trial and Error

Sometimes when we see something gorgeous we forget we are seeing the end result of a long process. Beautiful heirloom art is not sprung from a moment of finesse but from many moments of both success, error and skill building. It is trial and error that sparks our creativity, gives us free rein and takes us in directions we might not have immediately chosen.

One of the nicest ways I've seen to encourage this type of anything goes, just create attitude is a Journal Quilt. These are small, usually
8 x 10 quilts which can be done in a variety of mediums. I first heard about these from the Quilting Arts television show run on PBS. Patricia Bolton (Pokey) is the host of this show; a great one for sparking your imagination.

The idea of journal quilts is to encourage you to continually create and try new techniques. Because of its small size, you don't have to feel like you're committing to a large project. It's similar to a sketchbook for your various attempts and reminds me of knitting and crochet samplers. As with journal quilts, there is no reason why this same concept could not translate to other fiber arts as well.

This past Saturday, I caught another of my favorite shows: America Quilts Creativity, episode 913. This episode had Pokey on as a quest and to my great delight, she actually walked us through her method for creating one of her journal quilts. Mistakes often take us into new areas of creativity, opening our eyes to new possibilities. Use that freedom and try some journal quilting!

The things I ponder over

As I'm browsing the web I sometimes come across terms I'm not really familiar with. One of them was a Quilting Design Wall. I had seen it often but as quilting is newer in my skill set and being a starving artist, I had not come across it in my earlier years.

Fortunately, I've discovered the wondrous power of Google. Where there is a need, there is a google search string that will find it for you. So, for all of you other fiber artists who would like to fix up their studio (my lovely little term for all the crap I have piled up in my livingroom), here's a very nice article to help us out.

Today, we look at another one of our QuiltHeirloom team members, MomnMiaQuilts. She is also a member of the EtsyKids, EtsyBABY, EtsyWMI teams. The picture of her work I selected for today's post, shows a lovely little art bucket or Easter basket. With her love of making items for children, I thought it the perfect example.

Residing in Michigan, with her Etsy shop and two children, one boy and one girl, MomnMiaQuilts is one busy lady. In spite of that, she manages to place wonderful items in her shop, often inspired by her children. Part of that dedication to both children and her craft may be the reason her quilts and baby items can be found in boutiques from Maine to South Carolina and even Malaysia! She does accept custom and wholesale orders so if you don't see what you are looking for, send her a message. She just may be able to match your needs.

I interviewed MomnMiaQuilts yesterday, and I'd like to share it with you.

1. In the range of over 50/under 50, where would you place yourself?

As my husband manages to remind me at least once a week, I'll be 30 in December, so that'd put me in the under 50.

2. How long have you been a member of the Quilts and Heirloom team and what made you decide to join this group?

I joined about 3 months ago. I love having a team who shares my passion for quilts and fabric/fiber creations to share and chat with!

3. What do you consider your fiber art passion?

Definitely quilting. And I have a major fabric obsession...I love pretty fabric!

4. Where or when did you learn this art?

I am pretty much a self-taught quilter. My mom taught me to hand and machine sew at a pretty young age, but over the past 12 years I've really gotten into quilting and quilt design. I have never actually taken a quilting or quilt making class, and I hate patterns. If I see something I like I might use the pattern as reference, but I like to do things my own way and with my own touch! Most of what I do is one of a kind or custom designed. I love designing quilts and doing the piecing work - whether by machine or hand. My mom and I usually tag-team on the long arm quilting machine depending on what the project is and who has time to do it. And there is just something really really fulfilling about hand-stitching the binding that gives that wonderful finishing touch to a quilt!

5. Do you have any encouraging suggestions for someone new to your skill?

Don't be afraid to try doing things your own way! Have fun with color & designs.

6. Do you enjoy any other creative endeavors? And if so, could you tell us a little about them?

I really enjoy sewing in general. I love making baby items like my bibs, blankets, and fun creations like my new Creative Kids Art Bucket, which has been a big hit for the Easter season. I also enjoy scrapbooking, but rarely find the time to dedicate to it.

7. I know about your shop MomNMiaQuilts on Etsy. Do you have other shops or venues for your art?

I have only been selling on Etsy since March of 2008. I've been making custom quilts and baby items for over 10 years through my business Mom N Mia Quilts. I sell my wares at a select few arts & crafts fairs, but mostly through wholesale venues with fine children's boutiques across the country and world. As of this month, my items can be found in 8 states and 4 other countries! As far as online venues, I have had shops on lollishops and 1000Markets, but find Etsy.com to be my favorite and most successful venue.

8. As you look in your shop, what would be your favorite item in the bunch? The one you almost hate to part with?

In honesty, I hate to part with all of them, but the quilts are what I love the most. It's a great joy to send one on to someone I know will enjoy it, but I'd love to keep them all too!

9. Do you have any suggestions or advice for someone just starting out on etsy?

Don't give up! It's hard starting out in any business, and online is no different. Get your name out there - my best advertising is word of mouth. Provide a superior, high quality product, and your customers will want to come back again and again!

This tiny, almost 3 and 1/2 inch doll is just one of the marvelous creative endeavors being produced by the talented Denver, Colorado artist, Twentypoundtabby.

This very diverse lady is also a photographer and was kind enough to answer a few questions for me to share with you here.

1.In the range of over 50/under 50, where would you place yourself?

I'm exactly at 50.

2.How long have you been a member of the Quilts and Heirloom team and what made you decide to join this group? Are you in any other groups?

I believe I joined it right at the beginning which was the summer of 2008. I belong to EGADS - Etsy Guild of Doll Artisans, FAE - Fantasty Artists of Etsy, EtsyFAST and the Mile High Club (Denver Etsians). Right from the start this group was friendly and social so I wanted to join.

3.What do you consider your fiber art passion?

That's going to be hard to pin down. I sew, quilt, dye, embroider, felt, lucet chord, and do a little bit of weaving. Sewing Art Dolls is my biggest passion. I don't knit, which some people find strange because I have so much fiber.

4. Where or when did you learn this art?

I learned to sew from my mother at a very early age. My first sewing machine looked like -->this.

5. Do you have any encouraging suggestions or tips for someone new to your skill?

I've met folks who say they can't sew. To those I say anyone can sew if they take the time to take classes and practice. Very few people are going to be great at it right away - anything worth doing well takes study, practice and time.

6. Do you enjoy any other creative endeavors? And if so, could you tell us a little about them?

I paint, draw, sculpt, do calligraphy (SCA scrolls), bead, garden, and play a variety of instruments. I used to dance.

7. What is your shop and do you have other shops at Etsy?

8. As you look in your shop(s), what would be your favorite item in the bunch? The one you almost hate to part with?

Probably my dragon. I really like dragons.

Julie Harrison is the talented owner of Ju's Creations and her etsy shop, Rokstudy. Her motto of, "Visual Arts through the eye of a needle" gives you a clue to her favorite passion of embroidery. I was fortunate to be able to ask Julie some questions to let us step a little way into her world.

1. In the range of over 50/under 50, where would you place yourself?

I am over 40 under 50.

2. How long have you been a member of the Quilts and Heirloom team and what made you decide to join this group?

I have been a member of the Quilts and Heirlooms team since July '08. I found them in the Teams section of the forum and I joined because I wanted to continue learning how to quilt, the only other pattern I have ever done is the double wedding ring; and I wanted to be in team treasuries.

3. What do you consider your fiber art passion?

Embroidery.

4. Where or when did you learn this art?

Back when I was five I lived on a remote mission station in Africa and my Mom showed me how to do a few small things; when I was eight I started a Christmas table runner using my grandma's steel embroidery hoop, and I joined an after school girls club where they taught Bible and embroidery and continued my project; after that I was hooked and determined to finish the project. When I was fourteen and a half we moved to the US and at sixteen my best friend from Africa came for Christmas and New Years and she taught me satin stitch. Sylvia, my Mom and I finished the runner that year and I decided I had really honed embroidery as my skill. Since that time all of my friends have received a wedding gift, baby gift,all occasion gift.

5. Do you have any encouraging suggestions for someone new to your skill?

Use the giant beginner patterns so you don't get discouraged and quit. Small areas are challenging for beginners. Find some elderly lady to show you how, she has probably embroidered all her life and knows a lot. Find your own style, create your own stitch. My stitch is the anchor stitch. A stitch I use to secure corners.

6. Do you enjoy any other creative endeavors? And if so, could you tell us a little about them?

I am a published poet. "Kindness" has been published. I love to write, I hope to publish some books someday. I love candlewicking,I finally found another pattern to do, it is on my project "To Do" list. I play violin. Someday I want to try oil painting. [ed. 7. I know about your shop Rokstudy on Etsy. Do you have other shops or venues for your art?

I own Rokstudy as a domain name. Rokstudy.com is my website. I am looking at Artfire, I cannot afford the monthly fee. I am on Myspace, Facebook, and WeloveEtsy. Up until November of last year my inventory was in a consignment shop in Oak Glen, CA. I'm looking for a new brick and Mortar venue.

8. As you look in your shop, what would be your favorite item in the bunch? The one you almost hate to part with?

Cozy Kittens really shows a lot of my skill and it is my favorite vintage pattern. If it sold I don't know if I would make it again this is the second time I have used the pattern. I made a table cloth for my dolls when I was young.

9. Do you have any suggestions or advice for someone just starting out on etsy?

Take a digital photography class. Marketing is marketing even if it is on the internet so success comes with time. Join a team. Create your own brand. Appreciate and utilize Etsy's uniqueness to get your unique products out there don't try to make Etsy into ebay.

Recently, I picked up the DVD, "Judith Baker Montano Teaches You Crazy Quilting". This lovely dvd has hooked me into a new hobby. If you love to embroider and are drawn to quilting, crazy quilts can bring you the best of all worlds.

Your favorite fabric scraps, both solid and patterned, silks and satins, velvets and linens, plus scraps of your favorites trims and notions can be assembled with your own embroidery into a phenomenal piece of art.

After watching the dvd I immediately started gathering fabrics, trims and a bit of heavy muslin to try my hand at this art form. It is not quite finished yet, lacking the embroidery stitches but I can't wait to post a picture of it for you to see. In order for you to see just how beautiful a crazy quilt can be, I found this photo on Flicker to show you.

Improvising Quilters

Youtube has some fantastic tutorials for crafty people. I was browsing through some videos today and came across two fantastic videos for creating your own custom sewing table. The author of these videos is a quilter and the table she created for her quilting is cheap to make and innovative.

Since I am currently working on a table not meant for sewing and have very little room to work with, I fell in love with this idea. A weekend project is in order! Here's the two videos and I hope you find them helpful.

I love this garment, created by another Quilt and Heirloom member, Stormeejean. Her etsy shop promises, "My only gimmick is quality". If you stop by her shop, you'll see what she means. I decided to interview her and share with you a little about this talented artist.

1.In the range of over 50/under 50, where would you place yourself?
Over 50 and close to 60 and lovin it.

2.How long have you been a member of the Quilts and Heirloom team and what made you decide to join this group? Are you in any other groups?
I don't remember, I know that I joined then quit then decided to rejoin because I really enjoyed the fellowship here.

3.What do you consider your fiber art passion?
I love working with fabric. I love the textures and colors and the way they all come together. Jackets are my favorite, I like the challenge of taking something that is worn all the time and making it different, one of a kind. But lately I have started quilting and I find that I really love that too. Only I think that I am more of an art quilter. I love to see the way patterns come together, no matter what colors or techniques you use.

4. Where or when did you learn this art?
I learned to sew from my mother and my grandmother, my grandmother gave it to me as an art and my mother gave it to me more as a skill. My mother was strict about how it was put together, she always checked my work from the inside out.

5. Do you have any encouraging suggestions or tips for someone new to your skill?
If you want to learn to sew, try to follow through on every project even if you mess up. I have learned that these are not mess ups but another way to be creative. Sometimes you have to put it away and come back to it later but always try to finish the project.

6. Do you enjoy any other creative endeavors? And if so, could you tell us a little about them?
Yes I have started crocheting, it gives me time to think about things like what am I going to make next, or meditate on something I read. Also it is so relaxing. I like crocheting with thread.
I also make casual men's clothes. I named the shop after my husband and his car.

I love the Crazy About You" patchwork jacket. I love the way it feels on, it is made of colors that are neutral and looks good on you if you wear jeans or dress up.

Just enjoy, and don't take it personal if you don't sell stuff right away. Some people sell and sell alot other things take a little longer to sell. Just don't get discouraged keep listing and don't give up.Join a couple of groups, get into the forums,and create some treasuries and also comment and click on some treasuries. You know what you made and you know that you loved making it, you know that you did your best, you know that you put your heart and soul into it,you know how long it took you to make it, you know what products you used to make it and how much they cost there is always people that understand all that and they are your target market. I could go on and on but I won't.

"If it's age, I'm over 50."

How long have you been a member of the Quilts and Heirloom team and what made you decide to join this group?

"QuiltSALAD invited me to join the Quilts and Heirlooms Team in early November, 2008. I joined to get more exposure for my crafts within Etsy."

What do you consider your fiber art passion?

"Crochet is my passion."

Where or when did you learn this art?

"I wanted to learn to crochet, so when I was 18, I bought a little pamphlet for 29 cents, and taught myself. Today it's the only thing I do right-handed."

Do you have any encouraging suggestions for someone new to your skill?

"Like every other thing you want to learn: don't give up trying. No one is an expert at the start of anything, so rip out, and start over. Again."

Do you enjoy any other creative endeavors? And if so, could you tell us a little about them?

"I taught myself calligraphy with the instructions that came with the pens. I love doing it, but since I'm left-handed, I have to use special setups so that my hand doesn't smear the wet ink.

I love working with clay, and invented my own clay, which I've used for many years.

I've played around with almost everything: woodworking, leathercraft, soaps, candles, paper mache, weaving, painting, and more, but I always come back to crochet, clay, and calligraphy. I hardly ever use patterns; I prefer to invent my own."

As you look in your shop, what would be your favorite item in the bunch? The one you almost hate to part with?

"My favorite thing in my shop is always my newest item -- you know, the one that everyone is going to want one of." [ed. comment: at the time of this writing those would be her wonderful rose colored slippers and her woven ribbon flowers.]

Do you have any suggestions or advice for someone just starting out on etsy?

"For someone just starting on Etsy, I would say to read everything Etsy has to offer, then ask questions. Be honest. Be nice."

The method in the above article is very easy to follow and would actually work with a variety of needlearts including hooked or embroidered pieces.

So, if you have a piece of needlework stashed in a drawer because you don't know what to do with it, try framing it? Heirlooms need to be seen or they become simply dust collectors.

Going Green with Quilting

Ladies who quilt have a long history of recycling fabrics. Clothes were expensive and when they started wearing out, they didn't go into the trash. Rag rugs and quilts picked up where clothes left off. Repurposing is not a new method.

That tradition is seeing a current resurgence as more and more individuals turn to recycling instead of filling land fills. The Free-Cycle group often aids in this process and provides a free source in the way of clothes, sheets and blankets. These “finds” are morphed into their bare fabrics, added to our own recycled clothes, either too small, too large or just not loved anymore.

The picture here is an example of one such recycled project. Bright, cheery and warm, Jaci’s appliquéd quilt is made from wool suits, cut up and felted in the washer and dryer. These are a couple of things I made for team theme projects. The wall "pocket" is made from recycled jeans and filled with yo yo flower girls. The theme was "jeans".

The sand castle came about as a result of a beach theme. This was a first fabric sculpture for me and I'm quite proud of it.

My Wacky Summer

I have here some wonderful ideas for stuffed applique. Of course, if your preference is unstuffed, these designs will work well, also. It took several hours, but I enjoyed creating these wonderful quilts in various summer colors. Your prettiest scrap fabrics will complete these cuties. You can use any color scheme that you desire. I am hoping that all of our team members will find that they can't resist the challenge to create at least one of these. Me, I plan to create all three.

You may use any fabric, and flowers of your choice, and make the completed quilt any size that you desire. But the desired FLOWER COLORS are pink, yellow and lavendar, with a SWAG BORDER. (My Summer Garden, above, is the best example) I added the other two designs for fun and adventure. Remember to click on each quilt for a larger view.

100 Small Quilts ( or How I Started the New Year)

I have spent the last few days here at the Starry Home Crafts Studio

cutting scraps of fabric. I have been saving these scraps in big tins and jars for years. I finally took the time to cut them into 5 inch right down to 1 inch squares and strips. At some point during the third day of this, my husband came along and said "aren't you getting sick of this yet?". I thought for a moment and realized that, no, I could go on and on cutting up these tiny little pieces, because with each new color and size, I can see just the little quilt that this will go into. Those 3 inch squares will be baby quilts and appliqued flowers some day. And those 2 inch squares can be sewn together to make triangle squares for tiny pinwheels and stars. Add those to some 1 and 1/2 inch squares and you have thousands of design options. I really have no idea yet what the 1 inch squares will be. Stay tuned for That project. Oh, and the leftover scraps, too small to cut up, what about those? Well of course I saved them. I even saved them by color. Someday, they will be part of a fabric landscape. And when I just couldn't stand to seperate the colors anymore, or a fabric had too many colors to fit into one jar, I stuck all of that together in a tin. They'll be the stuffing for a primitive Patchwork Girl of OZ I intend to make some day. All in all, my New Year is starting out with inspiration galore. I wish all of you a wonderful, inspirational, and prosperous year.

Blue and White Floral Sisters' Choice Star Lap Crib Throw HandQuilted Applique Quilt

I recently completed a lovely blue and white sisters' choice star wall, crib, lap, throw sized quilt and wanted to share it.
This quilt is for sale in my Etsy shop. Click on the first photo to be taken there.

I am including a pre-binding photo; as well as photos after completion.

The somewhat fantasy flowers on the border were hand appliqued. I embroidered the leaves.

I am so proud of it. It was totally handquilted by me, also. Doing the 2 inch squares were tedious, but the soothing applique made up for that.

You will notice the extended tab on the back for wallhanging if desired.

The last photo was taken BEFORE the binding was added.

Hello I'm Edna. I love to sew, applique, knit, crochet and paint fabric. If there was just only more time in a day. The feel of fabric, and yarn is one of the most pleasing touches on earth. I love to do olde fashioned needleturn applique. I often drool over appliqued projects made by others. The color combinations and the unique designs sends my mind on a wonderful experience.

I would be happy if society would return to the good olde days. (Return to nature) I remember my grannys' old foot rocking sewing machine, picking fresh fruits from our trees, and even feeding the chicken, goats, etc. Those were the good olde days. Please do enjoy my modern creations. Good day.

My love of textiles has taken me on some wonderful adventures. My first love is quilting. My grandmother taught me to quilt when I was little and growing up in Ohio. We cut pieces one-by-one using what ever templates were available. Handstitching all of those pieces together helped teach me even, tiny straight stitches. First we made small quilts for my dolls and later in my life we made large quilts for beds together. She also taught me to applique.

As time has gone by, and now that my grandmother is gone, I have taken those basic skills and experimented with art quilts. There is nothing more freeing or more scary to look at your collection of fabric and just start designing. There is no right or wrong. If you make a mistake it generally turns into something beautiful and much different than your original idea.

My second love is embroidery. My mother's skill at embroidery was that of an artisian. She was so patient, especially since she was left-handed, while I'm right handed. Some of the stitches were difficult to master when you are wrapping the needle in the wrong direction! Since I do love embroidery so much, I brainstormed for a while to figure out a way to bring this art up-to-date. You usually see embroidery on pillowcases and I thought there was so much more to it than that. I had a stack of wool felt and some silk and then had an "ah ha" moment. Cuffs. Then I began designing some patterns that would fit on the average size wrist. This discovery has now led to my embroidery cuffs being featured in "Quilting Arts Gifts" edition in September. Fool Proof Sudoku Quilt

Fool Proof Sudoku Quilt
First of all, a sudoku quilt is THE most unrandom way to make a quilt look random. A sudoku puzzle is a 3 x 3 grid. Each box is made up of 9 numbers. The numbers don't repeat in a box or in rows, across or down. So how do you make this into a quilt? Here's the way I did it.

First, get a sudoku puzzle and solve it. OK, to make it even easier, use the answer in back of the book. I get my daily sudoku fix in my daily paper. Pick out 9 great fabrics. This is the fun part! Cut 9 squares of each fabric in whatever size you choose. I made mine 3 inches because one of my fabrics had animals that fit into that size. Make piles of each fabric. Assign a number to each fabric and label the top of the pile with masking tape. KEEP THESE PILES TOGETHER AND LABELED.

Now, look at the sudoku. Arrange the squares by number to match the puzzle. It is easier if you cover the part of the puzzle that you're not using. Take squares off the bottom of the piles and arrange them nearby. Refer to the numbered piles to make the first block. Remember to pay attention to directional fabrics. When the block is done, label it with a piece of masking tape in the upper middle square. This helps to keep track of the top and bottom. This will make a big difference when you go to put the blocks together. Repeat this process for each block. Make sure to keep the masking tape on until the blocks are all put together.

SQUASH BUNDT CAKE

3/4 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. molasses
3 eggs
1 1/2 c. cooked squash
3 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. each baking soda, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg
3/4 c. milk
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

In bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add molasses, eggs and squash. Mix until smooth. Sift dry ingredients together and add alternately to batter with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Beat until smooth. Stir in nuts. Pour into 12 cup Bundt or tube pan that has been well greased and dusted with flour.Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes or until cake tests done. Do not underbake. Allow cake to cool in pan on a rack for 20 minutes. Then invert onto rack or serving plate. Serve plain or with whipped cream flavored with a dash of cinnamon, ginger and 1 tablespoon brandy, if desired

This lovely frog was found on my back deck in a chair a few weeks ago.

What's so fascina-ting is that the frog is the SAME color as the chair. At first, I didn't notice the frog, then he/she moved and, to my surprise, holy macaroni, not only was there a chair but, also, a lovely living frog.

Actually, I was pulling trash from the chair, when the TRASH began moving - nearly peed on myself. LOLOL

1 cup fresh Apples
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup sliced seedless red grapes
1/2 cup Raisins
1 cup Plain Yogart (can substitute with mayo)...add more as needed
1/4 cup diced onions
1 TAB sweet pickle relish
1/4 cup chopped Walnuts
Fresh loose leaf Spinach and/or Kale and/or Collard Greens

Mix all of the ingredients together. Serve on a layer of fresh loose leaf Spinach and/or Kale and/or Collard Greens. Also goes great on bread as a Sandwich or in Peta bread as a veggie wrap.

This is a yummy yummy recipe! And healthy too! You can substitute using dried ingredients, but it is best when using fresh ingredients. Best eaten warm, but you could eat it cold if you like.

serves 4-6

1lb. spaghetti pasta cooked, drained2 cups Brocolli cooked, drained9-10 cloves garlic 3-4 Tbs. fruity olive oil1/4 tsp red pepper flakes3/4 cup coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsleylots of grated Parmesan cheeseoptional-2 chopped fresh tomatoes

Peel and chop garlic. Cook in about 2 1/2 Tab. of olive oil until golden...not brown. Remove from heat and add red pepper flakes and parsley. Toss into pasta, add brocolli. Add tomatoes if desired. Top with lots of Parmesan cheese. Add extra olive oil as desired.

Veggie Burger Recipe

serves 2-4 and is easily doubled
make substitutions as necessary

Cooked, drained, Black Eyed Peas (about 15 1/2 ounces)
1 medium Shallot finely minced
1 Scallion chopped
2 cloves Garlic minced
3 Tbl Parsley chopped
1/4 Tsp Chili Sauce
6 oz. Crimini Mushrooms chopped
1/2 cup Toasted Walnuts chopped
2 Tbl Olive oil
salt and pepper
1/2 Cup Flour
Oil for frying

Mash Black Eyed Peas in a bowl. Add shallots, scallion, parsley, and chili sauce. Heat a skillet on medium heat. Add Olive Oil. Wait a few seconds and add mushrooms. Saute just a few minutes until nicely browned but not cooked down. Add toasted walnuts, garlic, and saute for about a minute. Remove from heat and add to pea mixture. Blend well with a fork or hands. The mixture should be a little dry and easily shaped into patties. Form patties to desired size.

Heat a heavy skillet, cast iron is best with a good coating of vegetable oil. Put the half cup of flour on a dish. Take each burger and dredge in flour. Place in hot skillet and cook until a nice brown crispy coating appears. Turn carefully. When done, place on a bun with your favorite burger toppings, or serve with a salad.

Goes great with a side of Fries or Mashed Potatoes too.
